Learn to Play Acoustic Guitar BeginnerReviewsI first watched this DVD after renting it from the library, and I absolutely loved it. The lessons are easy to understand and presented in a way that keeps your interested. I'm more of a visual guy and I learn better from people than books. I've had countless beginner books on how to play guitar, but I never stuck with them since they couldn't keep my interest and felt too "slow" for my learning style. While this DVD is not a magic pill fast track that will make you better overnight, it will keep your interest and make you feel like you're actually making progress with your playing. I've been playing guitar for a couple of years, but I've been self taught; I didn't know much more than basic chords. Even though I watched the DVD with at least some experience, I still found it very helpful. I also like that it's not entirely restricted to just acoustic guitar: I played an electric guitar at the time and still found it helpful. And now I have an acoustic, which makes it sound even better. So if you're a beginner and want to learn how to play, or someone who's strummed Green Day's "Time of Your Life" thousands of times over but never went farther beyond, I highly recommend this DVD. I plan on buying the beginner's electric guitar DVD made by the same guy, since I loved his lessons here so much. Fairly easy to follow and great instructors. This makes learning the guitar "cool" by learning in your own home and a heck of a lot cheaper too than taking lessons! I bought the "Learn to Play Acoustic Beginner" by House of Blues along with the Guitar World Acoustic Rock DVD; do yourself and your wallet a favor and just get the former. In fact, it may be the best one I have. There is a small book showing you the tabs, strumming patterns, and how to follow along. It also includes links to download a tuner, metronome, and background tracks to practice along to. If you have an acoustic and are teaching yourself, this is the one to get for chords. The instructor is easy to follow, unlike others where you end up trying to play catch-up. A note for beginners, when you are shown the chords, sit down and practice for 10-15 minutes before trying to play along. That's the way this is intended to work. And if you have a steel string acoustic guitar, you will need to practice a couple of weeks (two to four) before your fingers can handle the pain of learning acoustic. I've been trying to learn on and off for a few months now and I would say this was a great place to begin looking. This DVD was very helpful and it goes along with a booklet you receive which makes tremendously easy to follow. You learn a lot of basic aspects of guitar playing (rhythm, strumming, finger picking etc.) You can certainly play a few songs by the end of this DVD. You should try it at your own pace and refer back to the DVD for guidance. I'd recommend it! There are lots of self-teaching DVD's out there, but this one is really great and easy to follow along. Learn to Play Blues Guitar Level 1ReviewsGood instructor. Slows it down enough to break out the finer points. The enclosed booklet is a plus. Positive: Good instructor, relevant material, good pacing, access to additional web material. Negative: Somewhat peculiar choice of riffs, oddball example blues leads, nearly useless tabs with frequent errors and no indication of timing or rythm. This is a great starting off point for those who want to learn the blues. I have been playing guitar since 1983. For many years, I have been looking for an instructional device that will help me get to another level. Once I got past the firt couple of chapters that did not teach me anything new, the whole rest of it was EXACTLY what I have been looking for. For a beginner, the entire DVD is going to be a must. McCarthy is an excellent guitarist, who plays with a pleasant variety and doesn't sound at all generic. The overall architecture of these lessons has been so well planned, that the end-user is taken on an easy and enjoyable learning path. It's not exactly "the blues," but it IS the BEST instructions for learning rock guitar, which is founded from the blues anyway. Definitely buy this series, it's well worth every penny! The content of the DVD has a lot of excellent and usefull information. The problem was the resources they referenced such as the support/member websites made it very hard to navigate, which made it hard to register and find the supporting information. Learn to Play Electric Guitar BeginneReviewsI like the music and diagrams. Pictures are great and it's easy to follow along. Not too bad of a video but I need one little bit not too advance.. but great for people that learn at a fast pace.. great DVD to learn all the necessary basics in learning to play guitar. A must for any beginner. DVD is great with different camera angles, great teacher, etc.. I thought the dvd was good but in the middle I found myself rewinding and rewinding a ton just to understand and follow along. he does describe things very well still but goes a lil to fast. I recommend it for people who want to learn to play the electric guitar! Really impressed with this DVD. Great instruction and the music is not outdated or boring. I've tried several learn to play guitar DVD before but this is the first one that really seems to keep me interested in coming back. Average Rating:![]() |

Guitar Method in the Style of the Beatles [VHS]ReviewsI found it somewhat disappointing that the video gives no direction in methods of obtaining sounds similar to those of the original Beatles recordings. Despite this shortcoming, for guitarists hoping to learn how to play some of the better-known licks of the Beatles, this video gives a broad sampling for far less than the cost of an hour of professional instruction. I found it to be of good value. This tape consists of a guy hurrying through several well known licks. If there's any instruction here I don't see it. Worthless. I completely agree with the first reviewer. All that I want to add is that I've tried a few of these "In The Style of..." videos, and all of them have been horrible. So this one isn't the only bad apple. This video was completely disappointing and bordered on absurd. The picture and sound quality is poor; the video looks as if it was recorded by an amateur with low grade film and poor audio/video equipment. In addition, the "instructor" was poorly rehersed and his diction was terrible. His constant use of the words "thing" and "stuff" lends no credibility. Overall, the video has a high-school project type feel. The video claims that "on-screen tablature" is included when, in reality, two photocopied sheets of music are merely enclosed with it. While I will not criticize the "instructor's" ability, he certainly does not give "an in-depth study of the rhythm and lead guitar styles of George Harrison and John Lennon" which the video claims he will do. Instead, the "instructor" plays a number of riffs (actually referred to as #1, #2, #3...)two times each with minimal, and sometimes no, explanation. The instructor's "in-depth" observation of Paul's fingerpicking is that he picked with two fingers when he finger-picked.This video is neither useful for a beginner nor helpful for a someone more advanced. The beginner would have trouble keeping up with the video because the "instructor" does not explain what he is doing or how he is accomplishing the sound. The advanced guitarist will be completely frustrated because she or he will likely already know every piece of information the video provides and already know how to play each and every riff (especially if he or she is a Beatles fan). JAMSTAR Play With The Band - VOLUME ONEReviewsI got this from a recomendation of a friend of mine that used it to learn to play guitar. He said it was SO MUCH easier than the lessons we tried to take to learn to play, and he was RIGHT. It doesn't bore you with playing the same chord over and over and you can play along with the guys on the DVD in like 20 minutes. It's AWESOME. Quick and easy. I am one step closer to being famous! HA! I am so happy with this product! I bought it for my 13 year old son, and he's already playing along with the band on the DVD after one day of using it! I can't get him to put the guitar down, which was quite the opposite when he was taking lessons from a friend of the family. He is not frustrated with this approach and seems to find it easy and really fun. Fantastic! I hadn't picked up a guitar in years and felt a little rusty. This program refreshed my memory and had me feeling comfortable with the strings again. This program's approach was clear and straight to the point. I wish I had had this when I FIRST learned years ago. AWESOME PRODUCT! Average Rating:![]() |

The "First Stage" Guitar Chord Chart - Learn How To Play The Most Commonly Played Guitar ChordsReviewsThis little chord chard seems to be exactly what it advertises as, an easy way to learn the begining chords. The chart is really easy to follow and you can definetely figure out how to play these begining chrods from it. The chart doesn't though tell you how to hold the guitar or anything like that so don't think this is all you need if you are brand knew starting out on the guitar. Pretty disappointed on the quality of the book by the production company, basically this is a 4 page 8.5x11 book printed on both sides. I was better off searching the internet for a free PDF file, and would have gotten exactly the same or better. But besides that, I give AMAZON five stars for fast and free shipping. I think this booklet isn't to bad for beginner's, but I would suggest supplementing it with another form like a DVD. It is a good reference though All this is bascially 2 8 1/2x11 pieces of cardstock printed on both sides. I think I could have just found a free pdf file on-line, printed it out, and gotten the same thing. It actually looks like that's all this is. Not worth the hassle of returning, and pretty disappointing. This was not exactly what I expected. There is very little instruction included, The First Stage Guitar Book is about the same. Try to find these books and look at them before buying. Average Rating:![]() |

Mel Bay Learn To Play Fingerstyle Solos for UkuleleReviewsI like this book alot. It has just the information and careful direction that I need. I couldn't use it when I was learning my first chords, but soon there after it was the kind of music I wanted to learn to play with a mix of chords and single notes. This book elevates you from brainless strumming to intricate cross-picking. You need to have basic music-reading skills (like, know the seven notes on the staff and their lenghs). With enough practice, sounding like a pro is within reach. I hardly ever go for simple strums any more - why sound like a tinny toon, when you can channel Andre Segovia? (Well, almost... :-) If you're into fingerstyle solos, and you want to apply it to the ukulele, this book is for you. Since I already play fingerstyle with guitar and banjo, it helps I know, but the uke is such a user-friendly instrument I think a beginner can be playing songs in little time. Start off with the old favorite 'first song', 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' to get you ready, and then to folk tunes and Hawaiian tunes that you really want to play on the uke. Tabs will help the non-musical notation reader. The companion CD will help you get familiar with the tunes and is just great to listen to. This book is not for beginners one wrote...depends on how you define a beginner? If you have a basic understanding of the 'Ukulele and have learned some cords and strumming techniques and have at least a basic understanding of how to read music (although this helps it is not necessary) and are patient then stretch your wings and go for it. I started playing about 8 months ago and using this book about 2 months ago and it is the only book I use right now and will probably be working my way through it for several more months. It taught me how to read TABLETURE a necessity for 'Uke or Guitar song books and with the understanding of the rhythm of musical notation (the CD can replace this although I have not used it yet) I am simply working my way through each song and getting it down about 50-60% then moving on the the next. Then the next day I warm up with a song I have down, practice the one I have down somewhat and start into the next and run through it a few time clumsily. Then continue in this pattern and depending on the difficulty of the song I find it takes me anywhere from a a few days to a few weeks to really get a song down. I live Hawai'i and love the instrument and it heritage and relationship to the great culture I live in but I grew up on the mainland, playing guitar and see the instrument for what it is and it is a beautiful instrument that you can play lead blues on or whatever else you want to and to really get familiar with the fretboard and how to 'Fingerstyle Solo' as the title of the book suggests this book is the best I have come across so far. I have several book and DVD's and at this stage of my self-teaching this book is the best teaching tool in my collection and most used...I can't recommend it enough! I'm a beginner and I love this book. Highly recommended; it starts off easy and progressively gets harder. The song selections are actually good and are fun to play. The best book I've seen for fingerstyle uke play. Average Rating:![]() |

While the ukulele is enjoying a well-deserved renaissance on the mainland, in the land of it's birth, it has never gone out of style. Hawaiian's took to the "jumping flea" right from the start, creating music of stunning beauty and versatility... |

The Acoustic Guitar Method Chord Book: Learn to Play Chords Common in American Roots Music Styles (String Letter Publishing)ReviewsThis book has a great chord's chart section. I am just starting out and some of the chord's are very hard to fret, but this chord charts are showing some variations that I hadn't seen. Good book. This book is a fine chord reference book. It does not just throw a flurry of different chords at the reader. The book starts off with a lucid introduction to the theory behind chords played on the guitar. If you are looking for a basic chord reference book, this is a real good one. A novice or untrained guitarist will benefit greatly, gaining a solid understanding of chord concepts. I highly recommend this book. The delivery was well within the promissed date. he publication was another rehashing of guitar cords. As a beginning guitarist with essentially no formal background in music, I find myself frequently at a loss to understand the structure of the music that I'm playing (why is this an A chord and why is that a D?). This book is absolutely outstanding in explaining the nomenclature and structure of chords, even to a relative novice. A couple of hours perusing this and I've developed a MUCH greater understanding of chords and how they are related, how they differ as you move up the fretboard, etc. If you're trying to learn how to PLAY guitar, this book isn't going to be useful, but if you're trying to UNDERSTAND what you're playing and don't already have a musical background, this book is absolutely great! Alfred's Teach Yourself to Play Guitar - Book and CD PackageReviewsThrough amazon I asked CyberCitySoftware to send this product to my brother. It would not run so he sent it to me, more postage. I tried it here and it would not run for me. I was so disappointed I had to go to another vendor to send him an other product he could use. I have all ready spent $17 more to sent a gift that will work. I found no number to call and my first e-mails were returned undelivered. I left a complaint in feedback about my experience with this vendor. Then I was sent me an e-mail saying (I promise you a complete refund once you remove the feedback. If you would remove the feedback that you left we will send a prepaid envelope so that you can get a complete refund). I wrote back (I will be happy to remove my feed back if you will send a prepaid return envelope to the billing address. Then refund the account. In fact I would be very happy to write a positive feedback). They wrote back (Our problem with your solution is that we have found in the past that once customers have there money refunded there is no reason for them to take the time to remove the feedback). I removed the feedback and e-mailed them back that I had. I have gotten no return envelope and no more e-mails. Average Rating:![]() |

Guitar Method [OLD VERSION]ReviewsQuite good learning tool. Far better than anything you can get for free on the Internet. The only weak feature is that the automatic tuner isn't very accurate (though it might be my cheap microphone at fault). Overall, the pace, level, and method of instruction is perfect for a new guitar player. I have been using this software for several months now and have learned a lot from it. It definitely builds up your chording skills and knowledge and starts you on the road to melodies. I have found it quite bland, however. The music selection is pretty boring and the program is slow to incorporate stuff other than just another chord and another chord. For example, I have yet to see any discussion of scales, which I have learned elsewhere are fundamental components of playing guitar. The strumming patterns are also very limited, and this too is a vital skill. When I learned a dozen chords or so and wanted to start playing from some other songbooks, I found that the strum patterns I'd learned would only allow me to play one or two songs in a typical beginner songbook. My advice would be to consider this as one tool in your guitar learning arsenal. It will teach you the chords and how to play in time (the play along guitar is very useful for this purpose). Also, if you just want to learn to play chords around a campfire, this would be your program. One last thing I have found irritating, that at least one other reviewer has commented on, is the fact that some of the songs seem way out of proportion difficult to what comes immediately before or immediately after. I was trying to play each song perfectly before moving on, but it actually helped to just move on and come back later. I purchased this with a new guitar as a beginner. After a few weeks, I find myself disappointed that I have learned more from free advise on the internet then what this software has offered. Here are my biggest gripes: 1) Flashback to 1976. I don't know if the video instruction was filmed in the 1970's, or the instructor just refuses to update his wardrobe and hairstyle, but it feels like I am stuck in a bad re-run of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. Also, it almost feels like he filmed it himself. I can almost see him running back to the camera after a take to stop the camera. 2) Breezes over some very important fundamentals. Without realizing, I was picking up some bad habbits b/c the instruction does not emphasize some key tips on fingering chords, using the pick, etc. After browsing the net later on some guitar sites, I realized I had developed some bad habbits that could have been prevented with just more time and tips spent on some basics. 3) Unrelatable - the songs you practice to work on chords are absolutely horrible. Too much dumb folk music. I like a variety of music, including some Peter, Paul and Mary. But this is just too much folk and it's depressing. I find myself not learning b/c I don't want to hear myself play that aweful music. Some searching on the net revealed I could be practicing some Johnny Cash (who played a lot of 3 or 4 chord songs). 4) Not so user friendly. I found it difficult to move around in the software. The product doesn't have the user-friendly feel that should be expected this day and age. This software could have been written in early 90's for all I know. Not impressive. I have some more gripes, but I think you get the point and I am tired of typing about a product I probably won't use much more. Basically, I am just DISAPPOINTED. I would recommend some on-line lessons which I have found much more modern and useful. This software costs about 4 months worth on unlimited online lessons. I found it's worth going that route instead. This is a good way to get started and familiarize yourself with guitar. It's easy to use, though doesn't load as smoothly on a Mac as on a pc. It's easy to follow and gets you strumming right away. Not very strong on technique--it's a big help to have someone show you the right way to hold your fingers, change strings, tune your guitar, etc. Overall, a good value for the money. I have had this program for about 4 months and still find myself trying to master some of the most basic songs. The longer I have used the more it seems that it focuses on "campfire songs". There are a few licensed tracks like Knockin on Heavens Door by Dylan, but when you get to that point with the software it feels awfully difficult. It would have been nice if there was a little bit more tutorial and a few sections that described things to watch out for when playing. Instead we move from song to song with a new chord thrown in. No practice routines or finer exercises are present from what I have found. Average Rating:![]() |
