I heard a few mp3s from this album and I liked it all. Acoustic self pity.

Elliott Smith is some kind of alchemist. Some of this is unpolished, even perhaps ugly. At the same time, it's moving and beautiful beyond words.

in his solo career. I've heard all his albums and I come back to them all often enough, but this one just stands out somehow. It has the most powerful emotional impact on me.

4.46 stars. for anybody who even half-way enjoys the one-man-and-a-guitar stylings of pre-"figure 8" Elliot Smith, go ahead and make that collection complete by snapping up a copy of "roman candle". i bought this album for that reason alone and wound-up very much enjoying it. the opener, from whence the album takes its title, is enough to justify the purchase price, but that's not to say that the rest of the album is anything to simply gloss over. Elliot fans who, like myself, became such because of the "good will hunting" soundtrack will be happy to have a familiar friend along the way in the form of "no name no. 3". also, the sinister swell that "last call" delves into as it comes to a close is pretty ded-gum neat, so be sure to check that out as well. i only rate this album a 4 instead of a 5 because i DO NOT wish to give the impression that i find it to be on par with "Elliot Smith", so if you are trying to decide between the two of them, hit that other one first. however, if after injesting that one you like it as much as the rest of the Elliot-lovin' free world does, be sure to get ye back out into thine music-gettin' landscape to procure a copy of "roman candle" for yo'self as well. enjoy!

This maybe my favorite Elliott Smith album next to Either/Or. I would purchase this album with Either/Or if I were just getting into Elliott Smith. It is a very chill album to listen to while driving at night, doing homework, or going to sleep. Elliott's acoustic guitar playing and lyrics are very well arranged. Give it a glance.

A member of the band Heatmiser, Elliot Smith recorded home demos on any equipment he could get his hands on. His first "solo" album is a cheap four-track home recording that hints at the melodic possibilities Smith would explore in greater detail on subsequent releases...

I have play Scruggs style banjo for about 30 years and decide I would like to look into my heritage by learning to play claw hammer banjo. This CD is require listening if you are in anyway interested in old mountain banjo

I am a Big Mary Z Cox fan and was lucky enough to meet her right about the time she was coming out with this album, so I heard her explain it to a group of banjoists at the Florida State Fiddling Convention right after this was made. She this was a meditation on the C tunings, especially the open C tuning, or the double C tuning and was a lot of music she first put together sitting on her back porch playing the banjo. Wish I was her neighbor! Everything sounds deceptively easy, deceptively clear, deceptively delightful. You think you can see the tab for these tunes or the notes go by on the page she is so clear and precise. Even playing fast dance music or in competitions, Mary seems to know that music is about sounding good, sounding clear, sounding pleasant, and saying something rather than proving how fast your fingers and your mind can be going or how tricky your fingerings, your tunings, or your right hand work can be. This is clear lovely music. It also gives banjoists on all levels a model of musical excellence. Without being watered down, this is a CD I wouldn't mind playing for folks who hate the banjo. At the same time if I am working on learning C tunings, I get this CD on the player, listen to it, and get educated as to what I could do if I worked at it.

In one moment, sweet-sounding voice of an angel; in the other, the scream of the devil... There is no better way to describe Cathy Jeans' extremely interesting voice which in some moments vibrates in the way that everything sounds even more colorful. There are not many white, female vocalists who are able to create the tension, passion and suspense that grabs the listener from the first note and keeps them interested until the end. Cathy is surely one of those who can! This successful result is also due to the material on the CD which is mostly Cathy's own and very personal. Music on the album is nothing but a happy and swaying rhythm-ýn-blues with some elements of pop or even sometimes jazz, which does not decrease the pleasure of listening at any time. Bluesy imagination; rocky spirit; and this woman's vocal, full of fire and pure sex... what else could we want? --Przemyslaw Draheim, "Twoj Blues" Magazine, Poland

Her vocal range and the passion she puts into her music is without equal. I hope her 4th disc is in my hands as soon as it's available. Please Cathy Jean carry on and thank you for some great music. I am learning the bass, and at the end of a cruddy day at the factory, I pick up my Fender, put in some Cathy Jean and play along and the day gets a whole lot better.

Hi! Bought a CD, had to get a closer look and listen. I enjoyed it! Cathy Jean is brutally honest about herself. Glad she finds comfort and spirituality in the Blues. I find this latest CD scary and beautiful. Keep working those legs. I wonder if Robert Johnson ever did much leg work.

I enjoy her music, in fact I love it. She is the best blues singer to come along in years... she puts her whole self into the music and that's what the blues is... you can hear it on her cd's... unbelievable... she just gets better all the time... don't ever stop!

You just never really know what to expect next from this lady-- will it be something mellow with a groove, or nasty and in your face! My introduction to this artist came when I received her second CD, "I Want". As I was checking out all the saucy photos on the covers and in the booklet, I was prepared for some wannabe who was only told she could sing by guys who wanted to hear a different kind of tune coming from her, if you get my drift. (No offense, Cathy-- this was before I heard it!) The first thing I hear, though, is a blasting boogie where she's telling some guy to be glad "she don't like jail", otherwise she'd put a bullet in his head. Ouch. The thing is, she sounded great. A little threatening, but great! Now, on Cathy's third effort, "Marshall Road Apocalypse", she heads in a raunchier, rougher direction. As with her previous CD's, Cathy writes all her own material. This time, though, it seems as if she's been messed with one too many times, and she's exacting her revenge on all the evil-doers through her music-- and wins! Cathy's music is regularly played on TexasFlood Radio these days, so when you tune in, launch the floating playlist window. That way when one of her tunes plays, you can click on the "Buy" button right next to it, and pick up your own copies of her CD's. Or do it the easy way and take my word for it-- you will love these discs in your collection! --...

Fretboard Logic - The Companion Video To The Book [VHS] Fretboard Logic - The Companion Video To The Book [VHS]

Reviews

I have spent about two or three months working my way through the Fretboard Logic I & II books, and treasure them for helping me to find my way around the fretboard. Plus, it got me to practice those full and partial fretted chords I have always avoided. The video is divided into two parts, a review and application section. The review portion is fine, although they might have added a few camera angles to the mix - it was strictly head on but with closeup shots as needed. The application section was thoughly interesting as the author demostrated the use of of pentatonic scales in playing lead for blues, rock, and country guitar. He plays and then repeats with a slower closeup shot of the left hand. There are also a couple of sections where he fades out as you continue to play with the background music. For someone with experience, the application section contains some great learning material. However, it was a heck of a jump for me to go from Book I material in the review section to Book III advanced playing in the application section. It will probably be years before...Audio and video quality is generally good. The author is obviously a master of his craft.

CLASSIC,HISTORIC...ONE OF THE GREATEST FILMS EVER MADE!!! I'm glad it's cult status now. Some of the best films are CULT status...Pink Floyd The Wall, Eraserhead, Carnival Of Souls,Scarface which had to have time to grow...Now look at it!!! Chinese Democracy had to have it's core fans for it to grow to what it is now...so has the D!!! Step back my friend and take a look at the train passing...or get the F on board...It's fine either way because THIS train is LEAVING. So sit there and stare at each other as U figure it out...What Just Happened!?!

I watched this film last year over the Christmas break and remember being underwhelmed. These guys are funny, and they have a rock `n' roll attitude, why is it that they can't make a movie on their own that is better than "School of Rock"? Outside of a few good lines ("Your training begins tomorrow at the crack of noon!" "Patience, young Grass-smoker." "I've had this birthmark since I was born.") and a few good bits (the spread-legs guitar that Kyle plays is pretty absurd), there's not too much there. Okay, Dave Grohl is pretty hilarious as the Devil, and Tim Robbins as the Mysterious/Weird Stranger is okay too, but otherwise - yawwwwwwwwnnnn...

Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny is a hilarious movie that most anyone will enjoy. It is not a life changing film, in fact, there is nothing deep about it. But it is a light movie that will fill an hour and a half of your time, and reduce some stress. The music in it is fantastic, and the lyrics are hilarious. There are nonstop laughs throughout. It is rated R for a reason, there is a lot of vulgar language and crude humor throughout. So while no kid should watch it, most fans of the D will have a lot of fun watching it. So, don't expect anything spectacular, but this light movie is a great escape from all the crap you put up with on a daily basis. A very enjoyable movie, filled with laughs and great tenacious music, if you get into Tenacious D, you should own this great movie.

TENACIOUS D IN THE PICK OF DESTINY is the lamest movie I've ever seen. It's silly, nonsensical, perverse, disjointed, and features two rolly polly stars (Jack Black and Kyle Gass) who would look more at ease receiving wedgies in the locker room than being phenom rock stars. Black is over the top and Gass looks like a brigadier general at Nerd Central; the subtle sensual repartee between the two is really, really gross. But you know what? I love this movie, as I do all things irreverent that never, ever, take themselves seriously. In their quest to become a rock 'n roll legend, JB (Black) and KG (Gass) must obtain the Pick of Destiny (one of Lucifer's long lost tooths); their journey is augmented by drugs and crime and foolish banter and interesting characters (including Meat Loaf and Ben Stiller) and lots and lots of music. And these guys can strum and Black has some serious vocal range; their musical numbers are a combination of kick arse acoustics and outrageous slapstick that had me grinning from ear lobe to ear lobe. Nothing in Tenacious D's repertoire is sacred or respected; everything is out in the open to be made fun of, especially Black and Gass in fantastic self-deprecation. TENACIOUS D IN THE PICK OF DESTINY is dumber than a sack of rocks. . .and I enjoyed every tongue-in-cheek second of it. Rock on! --D. Mikels, Author, The Reckoning

First off....i have to say that the first time i saw this movie was durring the worst time ive ever had in my life. This movie was the first little bit of lite i had durring the whole ordeal. Its hard to explain but i was in absolute hell and this movie lifted my spirits enough to make me realize life will go on and get better. For that i will be forever greatfull to JB/KG. I saw it the first time in nov 2007 on DVD. For all the people that give it a bad review.....if you are not a musician or have not played in bands with any consistancy....you wont get it. Well, if your a real music fan you might. All i can say is this is an amazing rock musical from start to finish. You just have to watch it....its AMAZING! The first scene to the song "kickapoo" was just WOW! Meatloaf, DIO, that kid....they nailed it. I could watch the.....its just amazing. Even though its funny it has kind of a cool dark mythic side of it. The part where Ben Stiller is telling kg/jb the legend of the pick is just AMAZING.Its funny but entrancing at the same time. The only bad part(and it is a major screw up) is the fact that the "master exploder" performance is in the middle of the film???? WHY?! It should have been made to fit in at the end....as the final climax after they beat the....well, i wont give it away. I seriously think they should rewrite it and re-release it. Even in theaters.Even with that major flaw it is a TRUE masterpiece of a rock musical. And i HATE musicals. They need to do a rewrite and re-release and/or a sequal. I LOVE THIS MOVIE! And it had a part in saving my life in rough times. Thank you Jack Black and Kyle Gass!!!

You don't have to be a munchie-loving stoner or an aspiring rock god to enjoy Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, but it helps. A dozen years after they introduced their mock-rock power duo on the Los Angeles club scene, Jack Black and Kyle Gass finally got the movie showcase (a partial spinoff from the D's short-lived HBO series) their fans had been waiting for, and it's a rockin' romp with plenty of crude laughs that will hit home for anyone who's ever played air guitar to Meat Loaf's "Bat out of Hell...

Pick Power! Right Hand Workouts for Speed, Volume and Control Pick Power! Right Hand Workouts for Speed, Volume and Control

Once again Mehling delivers a great, concise video. Very helpful for developing right hand fluency and staying loose. Great techniques shown slowly and clearly.

110 Minute DVD (includes music and tab) - Professional musician Paul "Pazzo" Mehling is a founder of the Hot Club of San Francisco, a group known for its fine gypsyjazz music in the style of Django Reinhardt. Years ago, when Mehling visited the Django Festival in France, he noticed some others whispering about his playing during jam sessions. He discovered that it was because his solos were not being heard so he obtained some advice from other gypsy-swing players there and then proceeded to retrain himself to incorporate a "radically different" guitar-playing technique using bent wrist at a 45 degree angle. Using this approach will result in improved control, power, tone and speed. Mehling points out that these exercises are for both hand and head because mental thought is also tantamount to good playing. Mehling is a very personable, articulate and knowledgeable instructor. The nearly two hours of instruction are graduated in difficulty and include such things as strums, vibrato, tremolo, single string techniques, chromatic exercises, string crossing, and sweep picking. Advanced techniques address legato, double down, and subdividing. All are excellent "keys" to good playing for more advanced guitarists. A committed guitarist practicing diligently two or three times daily with Paul (for at least 20-30 minutes at a time) will greatly improve their pick power. Not only will one's instrument sound louder and with better tonality, but you'll notice an ability to play faster (when needed) and with greater expression, authority and dynamics. Paul also shares interesting information about his guitars, strings and picks. Mehling's group has released nine CDs, and I would further recommend that, in conjunction with this DVD, you also study his most recent recorded music to fully appreciate the potential of learning his powerful techniques. Reading through the positions, listening to very differents sounds and harmonies depending by the epoch, trying to match Bach's voices or Paganini's virtuosity. All this, practicing your reading ! Very Useful ! Gabriele Cento - Italy

this is a great sightreading book. the excerpts/etudes actually sound like music and in some cases you can even analyze the melodies to figure out whats going on harmonically (like most classical melodies).

This is a great collection for fine tuning your plectrum technique. Standard classical guitar pieces that are VERY challenging with a pick.

Picks! (Book) Picks! (Book)

This book will be a Christmas present for our teenaged, great-nephew, guitar player. I am certain he will love it.

Cool little book. Great photos. Fastinating history. This is book would make a fun gift for a guitar playing friend or family member.

As the founder of PickNET (a free online global trading network for pick collectors) one might surmise that I'd know a few things about picks, yet I have to bow my head to pickmaster Will Hoover for writing such an informative and fun history of picks and teaching me a lot that I didn't know. The author clearly did his homework and has the knowledge and a deep appreciation for his subject matter. If I had to say one negative thing about this book, my complaint would be that it was too short. The great details and photos of vintage, promo, and celebrity picks just left me wanting more. A great read for the serious guitar pick devotee as well as for the casual music fans who want to know more about these seemingly mundane musical accessories. PICK up a copy asap! (Sorry but I couldn't resist at least one plectral pun.) Well done Mr. Hoover....Well done indeed!

This is a superb introduction to the subject of the history of the plectrum/pick/pic. Not many people think about the pick as anything but a piece of plastic but in truth it is the unseen connection between the instrument and the musician. It can be made from many materials and has a fascinating history. This book is perfect for the new collector.

If you want to have a good time reading about one of the most overlooked essentials of good guitar-picking, read this book. Hoover's style is direct, yet whimsical; his information is authoritative and far-reaching. I intend to write a followup review once I've had a chance to digest and reflect upon this small gem, but, as a guitar plunker (as distinguished from picker) of small talent and great enthusiasm, I wanted to add my applause to the nice things already said about Hoover's accomplishment by Chet Atkins and B.B. King.
